Sorare / VR
Sorare is a fantasy sports platform that blends digital card collecting with competitive gameplay. It focuses primarily on football, but also includes baseball and basketball. Users collect officially licensed digital player cards, which are issued as NFTs on the blockchain. These cards represent unique assets, offering verifiable ownership, rarity, and the ability to trade them freely. Players build lineups—such as a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward, and an extra player in football—and compete in fantasy tournaments based on real-world performances. The platform features a marketplace where cards can be bought, sold, or traded, and offers various game modes ranging from free-to-play to higher-stakes competitions.
Functions
- Collect officially licensed digital player cards in NFT format
- Build fantasy teams and compete in tournaments based on real-world player performance
- Trade cards with other users via a marketplace: buy, sell, exchange
- Cards come in five rarity tiers: Common, Limited, Rare, Super Rare, Unique
- Earn rewards such as new cards, in-game currency, and experience points (XP) depending on results
Advantages
- Free entry to the platform without spending money, thanks to Common cards available to all users
- A unique model that combines digital collecting, fantasy sports, and blockchain technology
- Official licenses from clubs and leagues, enhancing credibility and authenticity
- Cards can hold investment value — they can be sold or used in competitive play
- Transparency and digital ownership: users truly own their cards, not just in-game licenses
- A global marketplace with users from around the world and a wide range of leagues and sports
Disadvantages
- Entry barriers: while it's possible to start for free, meaningful competition and valuable rewards typically require paid cards—serious participation demands investment. As one user put it: “Firstly, it was a personal barrier for me… I realised… if I wanted to own even semi well known footballers… I would need a very big bank roll.”
- Card values and the market are volatile: prices can rise or fall sharply depending on real-world events, which introduces risk
- For users unfamiliar with blockchain or crypto, the platform may present an additional layer of complexity
- Dependence on real-life sports performance: injuries, suspensions, or transfers directly affect a card’s utility
- Legal and regulatory risks: in some jurisdictions, the platform may be classified as gambling or betting
- High competition and limited advantage for beginners compared to “whales” (users with large budgets)
